Measurement
dataset
A dataset is which set of rows a figure was computed from. Live is chain history ingested from the scanned networks. Sample is a seeded fixture whose transaction hashes start with sample-. The two are never mixed. A page that shows a number says which dataset it is.
Explanation
A fresh local database marks sample as the primary dataset so the dashboard has rows without a backfill. Production uses live. The API accepts dataset=live or dataset=sample on the free routes. Omitting it selects the primary dataset. Learn pages use that same primary dataset, through the cached homepage read, so a local demo does not pretend to be mainnet.
Sample volume is useful for layout and tests. It is not a measurement of the agent economy. If a citation needs a figure, cite the live dataset and the timestamp on the page, and use the methodology version that was in force for that rollup.
